Barcelona, Spain, Apr 18 (EFE).- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Saturday called on progressive forces worldwide to defend democracy, urging them not to remain passive in the face of growing challenges, including the erosion of international law and the normalization of the use of force.

Sánchez made the appeal during his opening address at the 4th Summit for the Defense of Democracy in Barcelona, attended by progressive leaders from several continents.

The Spanish leader said participants share both a concern and a responsibility to strengthen democratic systems at a time when they face mounting pressure.

SOUNDBITES OF SPANISH PRIME MINISTER PEDRO SÁNCHEZ:

"What began, as I have said, as a forum for dialogue, is today something far more significant. It is a political community in the making, a group of countries willing to do whatever is necessary to protect and strengthen the democratic system. Because the context is clear: democracy cannot be taken for granted. We are witnessing attacks on the multilateral system, one attempt after another to challenge the rules of international law, and a dangerous normalization of the use of force. And within our societies, inequality is growing; disinformation is eroding trust in governments and, consequently, in our democratic institutions. That is the real risk we are facing, all societies, all nations, that democracy is being hollowed out from inside while it is under attack from outside."
